Christian Ludwig Attersee

Bratislava 1940

Christian Ludwig, later known as Attersee, was born in Bratislava in 1940. Christian Ludwig spent his youth in Aschach on the Danube, in Linz and at Lake Attersee. He was a prominent figure of the Austrian sailing youth and won numerous international regattas. Finally, he adopted the pseudonym Attersee in his name. Weather and water have always been the main subjects of his artwork. His artistic career began in 1951, when he started writing novels, songs and designing stages.
From 1957 Attersse studied stage architechture at the "Hochschule für angewandte Kunst" Vienna. From 1959 until 1963 he sucessfully studied painting. From the mid 1960s inventions of objects typical for Attersee such as "Speisekugel" and "Speiseblau" or "Attersteck" emerged.
Attersee began to capture these invented objects on canvas and in color drawings, accompanied by object events in galeries, on stages and in TV films. Attersee was friends with Günter Brus, Hermann Nitsch, Walter Pichler, Dieter Roth, Dominik Steiger and Oswals Wiener, with whom Attersee sometimes also worked.
A scholarship granted by the "Akademischer Austauschdienst" took Attersee to Berlin from 1971 to 1972, where the cycle "Segelsport" originated. Attersee is said to be one of Austria's most diverse artists.
Alongside his work as a painter, he worked as musician, writer, creator of objects and designer, produced films and designed stages. Attersee participated in numerous international exhibitions. His first major exhibitions included the "documenta VI" in Kassel in 1977 and the Venice Biennale in 1984, where Attersee designed the Austrian and the first international pavilion.
In the early 1980s Attersee's exhibition "Attersee Werksquer" was shown at numerous museums and art venues throughout Austria and Germany.
In 1990 Attersee was appointed professor extraordinary at the Vienna Academy of Applied Art where he taught the master class in experimental design. In 1992 he was appointed professor for the master class in painting, animation and tapestry design.
In 1993 the "Gemeente Museum" in The Hague hosted a restrospective solo exhibition of the aritst's work. A further retrospective took place at the "Grafische Sammlung Albertina" in Vienna in 1997. The artist lives and works in Vienna, St. Martin an der Raab in the Burgenland region and at Semmering.
